Contract FAQs

Do I really need a contract? Yes. Every person and business will eventually need at least one. Contracts are meant to clarify agreements we make with others. They protect us if the other person or business does not keep up their end of the bargain. And, if a lot of money is at stake and a lawsuit is pending, a contract can almost always prevent costly litigation.

Do I need to hire a lawyer? Yes. At some point, everyone will need a lawyer, especially for the preparation of sophisticated and complex legal documents. But for simple small business contracts, you can expect to rely on templates. To be on the safe side, have an attorney do a quick review of any contract you use to be sure it complies with all the laws in your city, state, county, or country.

Can I use a freebie contract? Probably not. Web sites have good reasons for offering you freebies. It's mainly because they sell ads and they need a lot of visitors to justify the prices of those ads. Freebies encourages people to visit. Their contracts might not be legally binding and there may be no support for them. In other words, you get what you pay for.

Can I you use a contract of a friend or business associate? Probably not. Most people customize their contracts and, in doing so, they may omit or delete some of the most protective language. And no two businesses are ever the same, so that "borrowed" contract may not exactly fit your needs.

Should I buy from a big Web site run by lawyers? That's entirely up to you. If you can get a good price, unlimited use, fast service, and unlimited free and immediate support, by all means buy from them.

Here are answers to a couple frequently asked questions.

How long are your contracts?
The page length varies from one contract to another. After you delete language you don't need or want, add descriptions of your services, and adjust the font sizes to meet your needs, your customized version may stay the same length, or it may be shorter or longer.

How frequently are your contracts updated and reviewed by attorneys?
All new contracts are reviewed by an attorney, and contracts are also reviewed whenever changes are made to the substance of an agreement such that the legality of the document must be confirmed.

Joelle Steele has been writing and selling contract templates since 1983, online since 2002. Her contract templates can be used in the United States and most English-speaking countries.
