ARTIST'S STATEMENT AND RÉSUMÉ

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Creativity is at the heart of me, and it is my sole motivator in life. Whatever I envision, I can translate into almost any artistic genre using almost any media. However, when I am working outside the constraints of commercial pursuits, the brush becomes my primary tool of choice, and I automatically gravitate towards the abstract expressionistic and impressionistic styles of fine art painting, with elements of eclecticism, romanticism, magic realism, naturalism, and post-modernism thrown into the mix.

Much of my inspiration stems from my love of nature, and in those cases I tend to build an earthy palette and make use of plant, animal, and related imagery. But the bold lines and anomalous shapes in vivid colors are a direct result of the esoteric and abstruse imagery of my prolific dream life enhanced by the visions of my waking creative mind. I have a strong tie to my subject matter and the materials I use. With the latter, I am always fascinated and absorbed by the interplay of creamy paint hues against a sterile, coarse surface of paper or canvas. I paint for aesthetic appeal as well as the pure joy inherent in making art. While not every painting has a message, most have a story behind them, and each is an insight into both the natural world and the poetry of the imagination.

In my mind's eye, I always visualize my paintings finished and hanging on a wall. But, when I complete a work, I am frequently overwhelmed by the extreme variations between my initial concept and the realized piece. I see this as part of the creative process, and it encourages me to maintain an open mind and a flexible hand, always welcoming the magic of the unexpected.
